Ten tips to greener driving
- Correct tyre pressures
Under-inflated tyres are not only unsafe, but they increase rolling resistance. That uses more fuel. Keep them topped up to the correct levels.
- Service your car
Keeping the service book up to date should mean your car is as efficient as it can be. Don't look after it and efficiency will drop.
- Remove roof racks
Roof racks and boxes cause drag, and the effect that can have on your fuel consumption can be dramatic. If it's not needed, then remove it; you'll pay less at the pumps as a result.
- Think about how to keep cool
Keep the windows closed at speed, and avoid using the air conditioning - it can add around 5% to your fuel bill.
- Lose weight
Take everything out of the car that's not needed. There's no point hauling around buggies, gym bags or golf clubs in the boot; all they do is make the engine work harder, and that uses more fuel.
- Reduce stop start driving
Try to avoid situations where you're constantly stopping and starting. Anticipate traffic lights and drive as smoothly as possible.
- Stop idling
If it's safe to do so switch off the engine if you're sat stationary for a while. An idling engine uses fuel; one that's switched off uses none.
- Avoid hard acceleration
Be speedy at your peril, as it uses more fuel. Smoothness is key, avoid high engine speeds and you'll save fuel and reduce your emissions.
- Avoid short journeys
Engines work at their most efficient when they're warmed through. Short journeys don't allow your engine to warm up properly. Drive short trips and you'll use more fuel.
- Use high quality fuels
Fuels that clean your engine can result in better fuel consumption and reduced emissions.
